PeopleNet, an onboard computing and mobile communications system, is working with SpeedGauge to produce instant reports if a driver is exceeding posted speed limits. This “real-time” alert will allow management to respond quickly and hopefully prevent a crash.
What is being done?
Currently, each fleet is making its own decision based upon its needs and its belief of whether it needs this type of technology or not. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has been testing the monitoring systems to establish their effectiveness in improving safety among drivers. There are 270 trucks from three volunteer carriers equipped with the systems. There are still a few years to go with the study to gather grounded data, but the fact that this technology is available and being used by some carriers provides hope that all fleets will someday be equipped with instruments that will keep you and your family safe.
Are all fleets using this technology?
