Highlights from the FMCSA and NHTSA Large Truck Causation Study
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration worked together to gather 18-wheeler crash data from across the nation. With this information they were able to see just when, how and why semi trucks crash; what types of damage are associated with these crashes. Key points from the national, 33 month study include:
· There were at least 120,000 fatal and injury crashes.
· 141,000 trucks were involved in these crashes.
· Fatigue, drinking alcohol, and speeding are the top causes of vehicle crashes.
· The major events that caused the crashes include: running out of the travel lane (crossing lane dividers), vehicle loss of control due to traveling too fast for conditions, a shifting load, mechanical error and poor road conditions.
· Colliding with the rear end of another vehicle was listed as a top cause of crashes.
What This Means for Texas Motorists
Like any state, Texas has its fair share of trucking crashes. However, given our proximity to Mexico, our state is a major trade route for loaded semi-trucks.
