The good news is that the Department of Transportation's Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 2010 saw the lowest fatal car crash rate since 1949. It was down 2.9% from the previous year, with 32,885 people losing their lives in a truck accident. While this number is still too high, the reduction in deadly traffic crashes is clearly a good thing.

Trend Reverses When an 18 Wheeler is Involved

Unfortunately, the numbers for crashes that involve a semi-truck are not nearly as positive. In 2010, deaths due to a crash involving a large truck in Dallas and nationwide increase 8.7%. Over 250 more people lost their lives during a crash with a semi-truck in 2010 than in 2009.

Safety groups across the country are concerned at the rising number of deadly 18 wheeler accidents and are looking at ways to reverse the deadly trend.

"This distressing news that there are more truck crash fatalities in 2010 is a clear and compelling call for stronger regulations, tougher oversight and sustained enforcement of motor carriers across the country," stated Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety President Jacqueline Gillan.

Ways to Promote Truck Safety Looked at By U.S. Senate

One measure currently before the U.S. Senate is the CMV Bill. The bill would focus on keeping dangerous trucking companies from operating and would require all large vehicles to have electronic onboard recorders.

Of course, not all of the blame can be placed on the trucking industry and individual truck drivers. We all share the road, and must understand that using caution around large trucks can help prevent a crash. Give them room; do not slow suddenly in front of one, and if a trucker is driving erratically stay as far away as possible.
