Accidents caused by aggressive driving are sadly becoming more common. The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHSTA) defines aggressive driving as a progression of unlawful driving practices. When truckers engage in aggressive driving, the consequences can be much more serious because of the size and the weight of the truck crashing into a much smaller passenger vehicle. Victims of these wrecks can suffer life-altering injuries—such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, internal organ damage, amputations, and death. The financial toll can be enormous, with long-term expensive medical treatments and a loss of income when the crash victim is too injured to work—sometimes permanently.

Five Aggressive Driving Practices Causing Serious Truck Accidents

Truckers drive long hours with little sleep and are under constant pressure to deliver their loads on a company schedule that does not always take into account factors such as construction, crashes, and weather that can cause trips to take longer than planned. As a result, truckers engage in the following dangerous aggressive driving practices:

Speeding.

Truckers who speed have little time to slow down or stop suddenly when traffic requires this and can lose control of their trucks on slippery roads or on curves, with deadly results to the motorists they hit.

Tailgating.

A trucker must keep even more distance between his truck and other vehicles than other motorists because it takes so much longer for a truck to slow down or stop. When a trucker tailgates other vehicles, he risks sandwiching the much smaller vehicle between his huge truck and another vehicle in a crash.

Unsafe passing.

Truckers have much larger blind spots than passenger vehicles. When a trucker passes unsafely, he can easily cause a crash if he fails to see a motorist in his blind spot or fails to signal to warn other drivers he plans to pass.

Running red lights and failing to yield.

Running a red light is always dangerous, but can be even more so when a trucker does this, often causing a head-on or side impact collision.

Offensive gestures.

Truckers making obscene gestures, yelling at motorists, or honking their horns can cause aggressive driving to escalate into dangerous road rage where someone is physically assaulted or killed.
